From BOM to Shipping List: Automating the Power Plant Installation Workflow

An engineering firm managing boiler installation projects tracked BOM items, material orders, shipping groups, and release documents across separate Excel files.

• The spreadsheets had no validation logic, allowed duplicate entries, and required manual cross-checking at every stage.
• A missed revision number broke the downstream process, with errors surfacing only at fabrication or dispatch.
• Working across disconnected Excel files, the cycle from BOM to final PMS & SL, and release document took atleast a few days per project.

We built a connected web app to help the engineering team manage the full manufacturing cycle from BOM items to dispatch documents, with validation built into every stage.

• All master module data are imported before project work begins. Engineers collaborate on these records through a single, connected workflow.
• Projects are defined with a code and broken into major product assemblies such as engineering and erection scope
• Drawings are auto-generated based on the input data points such as project, category, size, order sequence, and revision provided by the team
• A BOM is built against each drawing, covering material spec, dimensions, weight, and quantity for every required item
• Material orders are raised against BOM items for externally sourced raw materials and components
• BOM items are later grouped into shipping units with total weight and consolidated into a single dispatch list
• A Document Release Advice (DRA) is issued through a Drafter, Checker, and Approver workflow, confirming a release is ready for dispatch before it reaches the procurement team
