QR-Based Product Authentication for Anti-Counterfeiting

Product serialization and anti-counterfeiting platform built to protect brand integrity from manufacturing to delivery. The platform can be used to verify authenticity of products, and gain visibility into supply chain.

QR-Based Product Authentication for Anti-Counterfeiting
The Challenge

A fake product and a real one look identical on a shelf. Anyone in the chain, from the distributor to the person buying it, has no way to check a single unit and get a straight answer, so a brand only learns it has been copied once the complaints and returns start arriving.

  • A printed code, hologram, or label can be photographed and reprinted onto fake packaging.
  • The same code copied onto a thousand fakes will scan exactly like the real one.
  • Brands had no record of which unit was verified, by whom, or where, so a counterfeit batch could not be traced back to a point in the supply chain.
  • Onboarding a brand and issuing its first codes took 5 days of manual back and forth.
Our Solution

Every unit gets a QR code carrying a signature produced by the brand's private key. A scan checks that signature against the public key Hugarex holds, so a copied code fails the check instead of passing it.

  • A brand is registered and its key pair generated in the platform before any code is issued
  • Each unit receives its own signed code, so no two items in a batch carry the same one
  • The code is applied at the point of packing, which ties authentication to the unit rather than the carton
  • Anyone scanning gets a verified or not verified result in the browser, with no app to install and no account to create
  • Repeat scans of the same code are flagged, which surfaces a cloned code the moment it appears in the market
  • Every code issued, scanned, or revoked is written to the log as it happens

Executive Insight

Anti-counterfeiting has usually meant making the packaging harder to reproduce, which only buys time until someone reproduces it. A signature can be verified by anyone holding the public key but can only be produced by the brand holding the private one, so copying the code no longer copies the proof. The scan itself becomes the record, which means the brand finds out where fakes are entering the chain instead of hearing about it from a customer.
